What To Do If Your Child Chips A Tooth

Kids are active, and accidents can happen quickly. A fall, sports injury, or bump to the mouth can leave your child with a chipped or broken tooth. While a chipped tooth may look minor, it still deserves prompt dental attention. The injury can affect a baby tooth or permanent tooth, and the right treatment depends on the type and extent of the damage.

Stay Calm And Check Your Child

First, help your child stay calm and look at the injured area. Check for bleeding, swelling, pain, or a tooth that has become loose or displaced. Rinse your child’s mouth gently with water to clear away blood or debris. If swelling develops, a cold compress placed on the outside of the face can help reduce it.

If you can find the broken piece of tooth, save it and bring it with your child for their dental evaluation.

Have The Tooth Evaluated

Even when your child seems comfortable, a dental evaluation is important after a tooth injury. A dentist can determine how much of the tooth was damaged and whether the injury affected the surrounding tissues.

Treatment may be as simple as smoothing a rough edge or repairing the chipped area. More significant injuries may require additional treatment or follow-up. The approach can also differ depending on whether the injured tooth is a baby tooth or permanent tooth.

Seek urgent dental care if your child has significant pain, uncontrolled bleeding, facial swelling, or a more serious mouth injury.

Protect Your Child’s Smile After An Injury

A chipped tooth can be upsetting for both you and your child, but prompt attention can help protect their oral health and determine what care is needed.

If your child chips a tooth, schedule an evaluation as soon as possible. Getting the injury checked can give you peace of mind and help your child get back to their normal routine.
